The recent and rapid development of
Nanotechnology is poised to be one of the most significant
developments in science of the emerging century. As a
class of technology, it is unusually cross-disciplinary.
Current applications in advanced sensor, diagnostic and
materials technologies merely hint at many thousands of
potential future uses.
Metro-Boston's tech-oriented university
infrastructure has pioneered and powered the development of advanced
nanotech research locally, but it is in the commercial applications
derived from that research that nanotech's future promise resides.
The EntreTech Forum's December 16th panel focuses
on Nanotech commercialization, and brings together some of the
region's nanotech thought leaders to help the audience outline the
present and future of nanotechnology, with particular interest in
the supporting role played by the region's academic infrastructure.
Moderator:
Professor
Ahmed Busnaina, Northeastern University
Ahmed A. Busnaina, PhD, is the William Lincoln Smith Chair Professor
and Director of the NSF Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center
(NSEC) for High-Rate Nanomanufacturing and the NSF Center for Nano
and Microcontamination Control at Northeastern University. He is
internationally recognized for his work on nano- and micro-scale
defects mitigation and removal in semiconductor fabrication. He is
also involved in the fabrication of nanoscale wires, structures, and
interconnects. He specializes in directed assembly of nanoelements
(such as nanotubes and nanoparticles), and in the fabrication of
micro- and nano-scale structures. He is a prolific and award-winning
author, teacher and researcher with strong links to industry. Prof.
Busnaina earned his PhD from Oklahoma State University.
Panelists:
F.
Mark Modzelewski is a technology entrepreneur, investor and
pundit, and has been an early proponent of commercial nanotech
applications. Mr. Modzelewski is currently involved in co-founding
and developing new technology companies and was recently involved in
the launch of microbial fuel cell company Trophos Energy. He is also
leading efforts to launch the Water Innovations Alliance and stealth
water technology company.
Mr. Modzelewski is the former managing director
and co-founder of Bang Ventures, an investment firm based in New
York with offices in Cambridge focused on technology investments.
Modzelewski also writes on technology and venture capital issues and
appears regularly as a commentator on Fox Business News.
Mr. Modzelewski’s career has crossed both private
and public sectors, and today he is a member of the Nanotechnology
Technical Advisory Group to the President’s Council of Advisers on
Science and Technology (PCAST), Water Innovations Alliance, Health
2.0 Northeast and the University of Texas Technology
Commercialization Committee..
Modzelewski earned a B.F.A in Painting from Boston
University and a J.D. from University of Denver College of Law.

Thomas Tiano, Team Leader for
Nano-Materials, Foster-Miller Materials Technology Group
Through
his work at Foster-Miller, Mr. Tiano is focused on
developing materials and devices that take advantage of the unique
electrical and/or remarkable mechanical properties of carbon
nanotubes and other nanoparticulate materials. Research
included development of conducting materials, structural materials
and electrochemical devices incorporating carbon nanotubes.
